Type the command cmd, press the enter key
Type chkdsk and press the enter key
In case there is more than one file which is open, the message displayed is that the volume is being used by some other process. It would ask whether you need to schedule this next time. If you press yes, then it would automatically get scheduled for the next time when you restart the computer.
Error repairing, locating bad sectors can all be initiated by typing in chkdsk and then pressing the enter key.
Some other manual steps to run the Check disk are:
You need to first double click on my computer. Right click on the hard disk which you want to check.
Go to properties and then press the tools button
Go to check now. A dialog box showing Check disk options pops out.
In case you need to run check disk in the read mode, you need to press the start button.
Some other error messages which are displayed are that disk check utility not supported with Windows files. Access needed. You can get accessibility to these files by restarting Windows. The disk check can be scheduled for the next time when the computer is restarted.
